Halfway thru the 2009 season……
The first half of the NFL season is in the books, and as for the NFC North, a few things have become apparent:
1. MISSION ACCOMPLISHED – When Brett Favre left Green Bay in 2007, he said that he felt that he had “nothing left”. When he decided he wanted to come back, Ted Thompson decided that he and the Packers were ready to move on to Aaron Rodgers as their starting QB. After a forgettable season with the J E T S, Favre signed with the Minnesota Vikings. And although he kept insisting that it wasn’t about revenge, he could have hung a Bush-esque “MISSION ACCOMPLISHED” banner behind himself after the November game against the Pack in Lambeau. Favre’s line in two games against the Pack: 48 of 59, 516 yards, 7 TDs, NO interceptions, no sacks, and the most TELLING stat, 2 victories.
2. WTF??? – What the hell is happening to the Chicago Bears? They went out and spent big money on Jay Cutler and Orlando Pace…..and promptly lost to the Packers in the season opener, lost Urlacher for the season, and discovered that Cutler just might be colorblind, since he threw 4 interceptions in the game. They bounced back from the loss, rattling off 3 victories, but the defense (with the play calling being done by Head Coach Lovie Smith), has not been the same without their heart and soul. They are 1-3 since the bye, coming off an absolute thumping at the hands of Kurt Warner and Arizona, and dealing with the rumblings of Chi-town calling for Lovie’s head.
3. CAPTAIN OBVIOUS – Detroit Sucks. The victory against Washington notwithstanding, this just a very BAD football team. The bad part is there is some serious talent on this team. Calvin Johnson is a STUD wideout. Matthew Sttaford will be a good qb in this league. It is just not jelling for this team right now, and no one really can put a finger on as to why. I bet Larry Foote is wondering what he can do to get back to Pittsburgh.
4. “CROWN THEIR ASSES!!” – Let’s make sure that you don’t sleep on what AROUND Favre in Minnesota. He has the BEST running back in the game right now….PERIOD. Great receivers that seem to catch EVERYTHING thrown their way (Did you SEE the catch Lewis made against San Fran?; NO other QB in the Division makes that throw, and only Jennings, Driver, and MAYBE Calvin Johnson could make the CATCH). There is a great defense on the other side of the ball, (with Jared Allen leading the way with 10.5 sacks)….there only drawback could be that Childress is a MORON. But, they have a relatively weak schedule the rest of the way….Playoffs, here they come.
